For our 10th Issue Kallifornication we did a spin on the term popularized by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ critique of capitalist and twisted celebrity culture in a 6-minute instant classic at the turn of the 21st century along with an album full of bangers that might forever play on Jack FM and KLOS like a recurring nightmare you can’t escape. But before that, it was a term popular in the 1970s used to describe the greedy and fast-paced real-estate development across the U.S. taking a page from the developer playbook in SoCal through the early 1900s. Coincidentally, “Kalli” or “Calli” means home in the nahuatl tongue. This is the place where millions of people live at the “edge of the world and all of western civilization.”
Kallifornication includes work by Pam Concepcion, Mylo Lam, Benni Q, Daryl Gussin, Janell Turley, William Ramirez, Ghada Morad, Jesus Cortez, Iz Evan, Rhiannon Cielos Chavez, Duncan Cuervo, Mateo Perez Lara, Sergio Brito, and Ryan Madariaga.
